My Comeback Story: James Y.
I first approached Dr. Cooke a few years ago. At that time, he tried some non-invasive therapies partially because he didn't think the knee was ready for replacement. He also expressed his preference for seeing what other treatments could do. This past Spring [2025], I revisited the knee difficulties with him. As before, he suggested some alternatives to surgery first. Specifically, as the physical therapy provided some improvement, Dr. Cooke asked in my last pre-surgical appointment, "When shall we do this?" And the new journey began. I was amazed at all of the pre-surgery activities that OAL suggests/requires. I felt totally prepared for if. I was similarly surprised that the surgery was completed as an outpatient - in and out the same day. As the post-surgery staff provided care, including going for a walk, Dr. Cooke was there observing and encouraging that I will do well. That gave me the confidence to go home and get started. My PT started 2 days later; the therapy staff were compassionate and understanding; they also provided encouragement and pushed me farther along. My first follow-up was with a PA who also listened well and provided suggestions; she was excellent. On the 4-6 week time schedule for me to resume driving, permission was given at 4 weeks. Although I owe myself a pat on the back for my work, I really need to shout out to the physical therapy staff. They work together seamlessly like gear cogs supporting each other. Dr Cooke bid farewell at my next follow-up appointment. So how am I doing? Excellent. Going up stairs presents the only discomfort; riding my stationary bike assists with that. I am fully functional - at least when it comes to walking and stooping and picking things up and 'working' while standing. This journey has been wonderful from start to finish.
