LOWER BACK PAIN PREVENTION
Low back pain causes many days of lost work and medical expenses. There are several things that can be done to decrease the possibility of getting severe low back pain. One is to stop smoking and exercise on a regular basis. Another is to be very careful about your lifting posture. Bending the back forward, rounding the shoulders and keeping the legs straight puts an increased load on the discs between the bones of the spine and can lead to disc degeneration and back pain. The proper mechanics for lifting are to keep the back straight and bend the legs so the muscles of the legs do the lifting. This puts much less stress on the back. Most back pain can be resolved non-operatively. However, if severe low back pain persists for more than several days, medical attention should be sought.
